Flavonoid

« Back to Glossary Index

Flavonoids are a class of phytochemicals present in a diverse range of fruits, vegetables, grains, bark, roots, stems, and flowers. There are six subclasses of flavonoids, namely anthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols, flavanones, flavones, flavonols, and polymers. Foods abundant in flavonoids include berries, apples, citrus fruits like lemons or grapefruits, grapes, leafy greens such as spinach and broccoli, legumes, onions, tea leaves, and wine. Research has indicated that flavonoids possess properties that can reduce inflammation, regulate cell enzyme function, inhibit oxidation, and more. Though studies have certain limitations, they consistently demonstrate the potential health benefits of flavonoids.
