Camphor

« Back to Glossary Index

Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) is classified as a terpene and is directly derived from the wood of the camphor tree, emitting a potent earthy and woody aroma. The extract is obtained straight from the camphor tree and is then subjected to a steam-distillation process, resulting in camphor oil. This oil is known for its rapid absorption into the skin, providing relief from pain, inflammation, irritation, and itching. Its topical application is widespread due to its antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Camphor oil has shown efficacy in healing skin infections, wounds, and alleviating symptoms of arthritis. Additionally, it can help reduce wrinkles, improve skin elasticity, and stimulate natural collagen production. Prior to application on the skin, it is essential to dilute camphor oil with a carrier oil.
